CHANNEL 4 NEWS - PAUL CONROY DISCUSSES THE CAPTURE OF LEADING HOMSI ACTIVIST AND JOURNALIST ALI OTHMAN.

There are fears the journalist, who ran the Homs media centre and helped photographer Paul Conroy escape the city, has been subject to torture and mistreatment after being seized by the authorities.

Ali Othman rose to prominence when he highlighted the shelling of Homs by the Syrian authorities, and was in the Baba Amr media office when Marie Colvin and Remi Ochlik were killed.

Ali saved the lives of many journalists including Colvin’s photographer, Paul Conroy.

CHANNEL 4 NEWS: HOMS - The assault on Homs by Syrian government forces has spawned a wave of video journalism by amateur filmmakers, determined to bear witness to what is happening – even if it means embellishing events.

CHANNEL 4 NEWS REPORT - Chilling video images, covertly filmed by an employee at the hospital, who risked his life to bring to world attention the plight of what he claims are civilian patients there, are to be broadcast on Channel 4 News tonight.

It is the first time such video evidence has emerged. Medical and human rights experts consider the intentional infliction of pain by doctors within the confines of a hospital to be the ultimate desecration of human rights and “a gross breach of medical ethics.”

The grainy footage depicts wards full of wounded men, blindfolded and shackled to their beds. Some bear marks of extreme beating. The apparent instruments of torture – a rubber whip and electrical cable – lie openly on a table in one of the hospital wards

A band of brand new, out-of-nowhere, self-styled TV news reporters has sprung up in besieged Syrian cities. Their sudden emergence is a startling new phenomenon of the 11-month-long Syrian revolt.  It is nothing short of a media revolution.

These young men (so far, it’s only men who’ve done this) deliver news with attitude.  They are untrained in the journalistic arts of impartiality and balance, their Arabic is unpolished and coloquial.  Sometimes, witnessing a dramatic firefight, they find it hard to contain themselves and an “Allah-hu Akhbar” (God is Great) slips out.

But their output is compelling and some have become overnight media stars.

This You Tube Syrian news revolution is happening across the country. There’s a fantastic gallery of pictures by Italian photographer Alessio Romenzi, showing amateur video journalists – known in the trade as VJs – at work in the small town of Al Qsair, near the besieged city of Homs.

But it’s Homs itself, a city known as the Capital of the Syrian Revolution which is now the undisputed Capital of Syrian Revolutionary Video Journalism too.

There, entire neighbourhoods have been sealed off from each other for months by Bashar al-Assad’s tanks.  Most Homs city districts now boast teams of revolutionary newgatherers, fronted by reporters.

Jonathan Miller (Channel 4 correspondent) speaks about speding 6 weeks in Libya where he encountered the vicious reality of life under Gaddafi, nothing however prepared him for what he would later learn from Syrians about the brutal murder andsystematic torture of men, women and children under Bashar Al Assad’s regime.

CHANNEL 4 - ON PATROL WITH THE SYRIAN FREE ARMY

Channel 4 News is broadcasting extraordinary footage tonight of Syria’s fledgling revolutionary army, smuggling themselves into the country illegally from Lebanon and in the dead of night.  The fighters of the “Syrian Free Army” claim that they operate under a unified command based in Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan as well as inside Syria itself. Estimates of their numbers go as high as 15,000, which may well be an exaggeration, yet the situation on the ground is clearly changing.
